Bree and I visited Killochries, and were gob-smacked by the operation that Iain & Sheena have going on there. We have seen Highland folds all over the world and the quality of the cattle was remarkable, considering the animals have to fend for themselves on rough terrain and moorlands, and that they have a commercial slant with their beef cross-breeding program. Their use of genetic testing as a tool has to be admired and helps remove the subjectivity that we all suffer from in our selection process.
A combination of structurally sound, functional animals with flesh allows their cattle to be just as useful in the show ring as on the butcher’s block. We were particularly impressed with the land management program they are doing on the moors with heather regenation and birdlife. Iain and Sheena are very forward thinking with the breed and their conservation strategies and this will no doubt help Highlands and moorlands survive and thrive into the future.

We visited the Fold yesterday taking our American friends. One of the girls work on a cattle ranch in Wyoming and was so excited to visit.
Iain and Derek took us out and all of us were amazed at both the cattle and the warm welcome we were given. The guys are so passionate about the breed and are massively knowledgeable about their stock and the environment surrounding them. We were very grateful for the short notice we gave them and the way they treated our American friends. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. The educational aspects are massive and delivered in such a casual and informative way. I loved our visit and will certainly be back to see and hear more.
