About The Killochries Fold
About Killochries Highland Cattle
Our last stock bull, Somerled of Killochries descending from Millerston and Auchnacraig has now come onto his own line and is currently in North Uist at Ardbhan as one of the senior bull in this famous fold. While with us Somerled produced some excellent good looking stock and the task was to find an outcross bull, with significant scope to breed with Somerled’s daughters.
Sean Ghart of Ormasary, was bought at Oban for eight thousand guineas in February 2007.
Sean has proven to be a worthy successor to Somerled, producing both even and high-quality calves. Interestingly enough both Somerled and Sean go back to Lord Angus of Old Greenlaw, the father of Kirkibost who while at Ormsary produced some of the best heifers I have seen shown and sold at Oban.
This large mob, as with all our cattle, are currently wintered out. The primary selection is always the cows ability to grow a good calf (200 day milk, see breeding policies). Once a competent, commercial cow is established then only the cows with the best breed characteristics are allowed to remain in the group. Particular emphasis is given to conformation and head.
In some cases where horns are damaged and genetics of the animal were known to be good, an animal may be kept in this breeding group otherwise animals not meeting the highest standard are taken out of the herd and either crossed with the Shorthorn or are sold for beef.
